Yearning to Yodel in Europe

Dear Family,

For those who have been following our blog, I applaude you. For those of you who have not, I encourage you to do so at jennyandjonny.blogspot.com , and I give you a brief update of our whereabouts and activities here.

Jenny and I have been in Europe for the last six days, and we plan on being here for another five weeks or so. Thus far we have eaten raw French beef, stayed in Europe's #1 rated hotel (as judged by Travel and Leisure Magazine), and perused the world's largest collection of sub-saharan butterflies. Aside from the raw beef and a bartender who tried, unsuccessfully, to charge me twelve dollars for 16 ounces of Sprite, everything has been very pleasant. As I'm sure Scott Sr. and Liz can tell you, coming to Western Europe after India is kind of like going to Minneapolis. *** In case you're wondering, I gave half of the glass of Sprite back to the bartender and paid only 4 dollars - it was an unpleasant experience for Jenny, myself, and the bartender.

Our itinerary included and includes stops in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland (with potential yodeling in the Bernese Oberland), Italy, Catalonia, Portugal, and the UK. While we have a pretty good list of things to do in those countries and regions, we welcome any suggestions, particularly for London and the surrounding environs. Our New Addition

Miriam Caroline Ebert

Our last little Ebert addition was born Friday. Baby Miriam is named after Steve's Grandmother, Miriam Milne, and was fittingly born on her wedding anniversary. She is also named after my grandma, Carol Spendlove, and Great-Grandmother Caroline Romney Eyring (a good dose of Grandma Eyring's characteristics of determination, optimism, strength, persistence and high expectations, is definitely hoped for in baby Miriam!) Our children already call Miriam "baby Mia", her approved nickname.

Following her sisters' petite birth weights in the 5 to 7 pound range, apparently Miriam wasn't too pleased with her healthy 8+ pounds.

Miriam's siblings are simply crazy about her. They have created cards for her, sung songs about her, snuggled her and even fought over her.

We can't wait for baby Miriam to meet her wonderful Calder family.

Introducing John Oblad Calder Jr.

On Wednesday, May 20, at 11:10am our son, John Oblad Calder Jr. was born. He weighed 9 lbs. 15.6 ounces and measured 22 inches in length. As you know, he is my parent's first grandchild and Grandma and Grandpa Calder's 12th great-grandchild! Here are some of our favorite photos.

A New Landscape

On April 28, 2009, Grandma Rose passed away. In a way, the landscape of our lives has been changed. Grandma gathered us together, whether for dinners at the Mandarin Restaurant and Olive Garden or Sunday night political discussions held in the family room amidst piles of biographies and jigsaw puzzles half complete. With the loss of Grandma, a new generation of "gatherers" has emerged. Through them, reunions are being planned, contact lists are circulating and web pages are in the making. I look forward to this new energy and the Calder connections that are sure to continue from one generation to the next.
